The Path

it was a very dark night,i was going home after a long day's work and having failed to catch the last bus i decided to trek(what else could i have done). The only nearest way home was a track that ran through a cemetary and i decided that it was going to be my route home. The intensity of the darkness increased as i negotiated a bend that led into the track. There were flashes of lightening criss-crossing the sky and i computed that it was going to rain-and not lightly too. i was now walking down the track which was paved on both sides with willow trees and it was so dark that you could cut slabs of it with a knife i could only see a few centimetres in front of me- no thanks to the light from an old greasy lantern given to me by my grandfather(it was the only thing i inherited from him, my brother got an old rusty cutlass which was said to have cut down 57 Germans during the first world war, of course he threw it away as soon as the old man died).as i walked through it began to rain and i thought i heard noises behind me but when i turned i saw nothing.Flashes of lightening continued and i increased my pace now eager to get out of the path and onto the main road as soon as possible. The willow trees now looked like giant monsters and the faster i walked, the slower i became. There was a sudden flash and with it's accompanying light i saw the wooden cross on a freshly dug grave, but that was not all................there was someone or something leaning on it. to be continued
